chapter1 —— What is 996 work schedule?

996 refers to a working system that requires employees to work from 9:00AM to 9:00PM, six days a week.

chapter 2 —— Who will work such long hours? What kinds of jobs require employees to work 996?

There’s a survey suggested that within the fast-paced internet and tech industry, web developer is known to be one of the most stressful job.

So, most of you guessed it right. IT guys, such as programmers, developers, most of them are related to IT industry.

But there are also other professions who need to work 996. i.e.: Business Development Specialists; Accountants, rideshare driver, UI/UX designers etc.

  • But these professions sound like they are more free….?

  • I think accountants, rideshare drivers and designers really work too hard.

chapter 3 —— When did 996 really start?

It appeared online as early as 2016, when a number of employees revealed that their employer, 58.com, does not reasonably compensate them for working 996.

The response from the company claimed that its business had grown exponentially and that it wanted to motivate employees to be dedicated to their job.

So it started when some 58.com employees were not happy about their work schedules and compensation.

Since then, the problem of long hours of work and lack of compensation were not only not being addressed, but CEOs from tech industry want it to be the standard of their work schedule.

Let’s think out of the box and look at other corners of the world. For example Silicon Valley in California, USA.

Silicon Valley is the world’s most famous tech hub. Do they work this long hours as well?

The answer is not really. Of course some work long hours. But most of them don’t.

If they work long hours, they  should and will be compensated.

Why? Because employment regulations are strict and are well enforced.

chapter 4 —— Does 996 guarantee good results? Does it really guarantee quality work?

There is an argument to be made that too much time working can destroy creativity and that taking a break and going for a hike can yield better results.

Play hard, work hard. A healthy body is more productive.

That’s why Japanese employers want to pay their employees to sleep more.

At the end of the day, it’s about health and living a full live. If life is only about work, it’s not life at all.

Long working hours will cause one problem or another and it never ends.

chapter 5 —— 996 caused a lot of debates online. However, to be fair, does many people work 996?

According to PingWest survey, roughly 80% could not find an internally declared and strictly enforced 996 work schedule, while nearly all of them could say that they have a somewhat modified version of 996, such as 995 (five days), or 11115 (11Am to 11PM for five days)

Each companies has its own working environment and requires employees to behave differently. Some companies encourages employees to work overtime.  In other companies, sometimes an individual supervisor may arrange longer work schedules for employ.

  • 2nd reason why there is 996 work schedule is due to competition, especially in the tech industry.

Workload in China are indeed more than average normal in the international community, especially European and North American countries.

The 996 work schedule is fundamentally caused by Chinese companies’ pursuit of fast development.

That’s why this 996 debate does not really happen in US. They believe in hard work, but they also believe in life-work balance.

There’s research that lends credence to shorter workweeks. In 2016, a team of researchers from Australia and Japan studied the impacts of shorter versus longer workweeks on the cognitive function of more than 6000 men and women. They found a 25-hour workweek led to peak performance.

I think there should not be a 996 debates. Ultimately, it’s your choice. There are long workweek and short workweek. It’s up to you to choose which one you like.

  • You can have a short workweek with high productivity.

  • You may also have a long workweek with low productivity.

  • If you are poor and want to be rich, of course you may need to work hard and longer hours at the beginning of your career.

  • If you love what you do and have passion in your work, of course you work longer hours. You may not just work 996, you may work 7-10-7 (7AM to 10PM, Seven days a week).

But you are rich, or, maybe you are doing ok, but you don’t want to work that hard, then it’s also your choice to follow your heart.

  • It’s not about right or wrongs;

  • It’s not about should or shouldn’t;

  • it’s about you want or you don’t want.

  • If it is about choice, you are more willing to accept it. Then 996 becomes meaningful.

  • If 996 is to be enforced and become a MUST, it may not yield great impact to the companies.

Respect their employees and compensate them proportionally if you (employers) want them to work 996, or else find those who are willing to work 996, and of course, you (employers) still need to compensate them proportionally.

chapter 6 —— Under what conditions, you are willing to work 996 work schedule?

Actually there are research from Stanford University proves that working from home is actually very productive.

So, their employees have different choice.

I think employers or managements should be smart enough on how to lead their employees and make them SO willing to work 996, whether it is financial benefits, career advancement etc.

The worst thing an employer should do is to FORCE them to work 996.

Labor law should also be strictly enforced to prevent employers from playing the FEAR game, for example threatening their employees to work 996 work schedule or they will be fired.

  • Most employers want to pay their employees less and want them to work more.

  • Most employees want to work less and want to be paid more.

So I think there should be a good balance between these two.

At the end, I believe it’s about choice.

Here is one advice I believe the most:

Do what you like, like what you do.
